Stretch marks are formed by tears in the middle layer of skin, which is known as the dermis. These tears are usually the results of rapid weight changes: they may occur as a result of pregnancy, growth during puberty, bodybuilding or hormonal changes. Stretch marks are more common in women but can also occur on men. They are usually red or purple in color when they form and fade over time into white or silver lines. They appear as indented streaks or lines on various parts of the skin, usually in the regions around the hips, thighs, breasts and abdomen.
